Memorial complex Heroes' Square

The memorial complex at Heroes' Square includes monuments to the famous men who defended Novorossiysk - Caesar Kunikov and Nikolai Sipyagin. Many are buried here: Heroes of the Soviet Union Sergei Kadanchuk and Alexei Lezhenin, commanders, politicians and  marine paratroopers A. Lunacharsky, P. Isayev, A. Tikhostup, A. Tsedrik and others who defended Novorossiysk in the battles of September 1943.

Closer to the wharf, stands an obelisk that was erected in 1940 in honor of the 20th anniversary of Novorossiysk's liberation from White Army soldiers and invaders.

On September 15, 1958, the Eternal Flame was placed between the graves of Caesar Kunikov and Nikolai Sipyagin.

In 1974, Heroes' Square was reconstructed. The memorial wall was erected with an inscription that reads, "To the sons of the motherland whose remains rest in the land of Novorossiysk."  A portrait gallery of the Heroes of the Soviet Union who defended Novorossiysk supplements the square's collection. The memorial complex was designed by architects G. Nadzharyan and G. Mayornikov.

On May 9, 1975, Post No. 1 was placed near the memorial wall at Heroes' Square. The annual candlelight procession, called Beskozyrka (Sailor Hat),which is dedicated to the landing of the naval troops at Malaya Zemlya, begins at the Eternal Flame.

Novorossiysk Post No.1 is famous as one of the best eternal flame memorials in Russia.
