Victory Park is in the centre of Kazan and occupies an area of almost 50 hectares.
Land reclamation for park constructions began in 1970s. What was formerly a marsh area was planted with 1,418 trees and bushes which are equal to the number of days and nights the Great Patriotic War lasted.
In 1995, the 50th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War was marked with a 42-meter monument, featuring the Order of Victory in the rays of glory, with statues of a warrior wielding a sword and a mother holding a child, all standing on the pedestal. The top of the monument is adorned with a laurel wreath.
The names of Tatarstan residents who fought at the front during the Great Patriotic War and served at home are immortalised on the centre colonnade (227 Heroes of the Soviet Union, 2 Heroes of Socialist Labour, and 34 Order of Glory holders). The eternal flame burns in the centre of the colonnade.
Kazan remains the home of 8,786 participants of the Great Patriotic War, 103,279 local workers during the war effort, 300 underage concentration camp survivors and 351 recipients of the "Survivor of Leningrad Blockade" medal.
