Although the details of the meeting were not made public, Putin's spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that both heads of government had discussed "current issues of their countries' bilateral relations, primarily trade and economic cooperation."
In September 2011, Atambayev, the leader of Kyrgyzstan's Social Democratic Party, was registered as a presidential candidate. The republic will hold presidential elections October 30, in which Atambayev will be vying for the post along with 18 other contenders.
