Izvestia: “Putin meets with Ukrainian president in Kiev”

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, for talks with President Viktor Yanukovych.

Russia’s Prime Minister Vladimir Putin arrived in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, for talks with President Viktor Yanukovych.

“As a result of the policy you’ve set forth, we now see our political investment yielding economic dividends,” Putin said in his opening remarks.

The Russian prime minister highlighted a significant growth in bilateral trade in recent months. “Between January and September this year, it amounted to 77%, almost as high as the pre-crisis level,” he said.

Putin acknowledged that preparations of his visit to Ukraine had not been without difficulty, as compromise solutions had to be found in all major areas of the relationship.

Whilst in Kiev, Putin is also scheduled to meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Mykola Azarov, who has already announced his intention to bring up the issue of pricing Russian natural gas supplies for next year.
