Nezavisimaya Gazeta: “No Time for Panicking and Feeling Sorry for Oneself”

Bloggers commenting on the government's anti-crisis measures freely indulge in humour and irony. Trying to come to grips with the reality of the crisis, they think they must rely on themselves rather than wait for assistance from the government.

Bloggers commenting on the government's anti-crisis measures freely indulge in humour and irony. Trying to come to grips with the reality of the crisis, they think they must rely on themselves rather than wait for assistance from the government.

They have gleaned from Medvedev's speech that there is no hope for salvation. The authorities simply do not understand how to do it or why. In the end, there will be imperial ambitions at the bottom and a mixture of state corporations and tame oligarchs at the top, leaving no place for the middle class (since nobody needs it), which the crisis is methodically liquidating.

You may wonder what will happen to large regional companies (many of which are facing the doom of shrinking loans), which are closely connected with local United Russia elites. There is a glimmer of hope that something positive will come out of this conflict. The dollar will gradually grow to 30 roubles per $1. The situation in November will be relatively calm, but another period of liquidity shortage in the banking system is possible in December. Then again, we may live peacefully until February.

serg-from-perm: I also watched some news today (not the First or Rossiya channels)... The usual information: everything is bad - the crisis... Medvedev has arrived... Putin has met... Crime galore, etc.

My day was made by the news about the growing output of, sorry, condoms, despite the global economic crisis!! And the plant's profits are growing too!! Well, it's logical, because having babies and getting treatment for STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) would be too expensive in the current conditions!! But in general, this is encouraging - at least someone is doing well!!

On the whole, I've been trying to understand which sectors have not been hit much by the crisis, and are even growing. First, mortuaries will always do well, and they will even get more clients in conditions of economic and social instability!!

Second, the related sector - medicine, which should also be doing well, what with nerves, stress, heart problems and heart attacks, strokes, and chronic diseases.

The other industries the crisis will not affect - apart from condom producers - are the pulp and paper sector, at least the producers of toilet paper.

And lastly, officials will always be well off!!

Paulsiebert: The results of the 10th congress of United Russia, the main political event recently, can be expressed in one phrase written by a female correspondent at the official daily, Rossiiskaya Gazeta: "The new anti-crisis statement delivered by Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin at the 10th congress of United Russia yesterday binds the party to use the global [financial] crisis as the jumping off point for a strategic leap."

In thieves' jargon, which our current leaders like to use so much, a leap is an act of theft carried out without a plan. In other words, the global crisis is a fundamental condition for large-scale illegal seizure of others' property, such as state or private assets.

Oops, they let the cat out of the bag...

gurgen-chel: I hope that Putin and Medvedev will justify the people's trust in them and lead the country out of the crisis, which could destroy our country. Well, I'm sure they will. We now have strong and, most importantly, smart leaders who can stand up in the most difficult situations and crises.

s15c16we89: Last week, the Russian authorities, who had earlier denied that there was a crisis in Russia, had to admit that there is a financial and economic crisis under way.

The tiny hope that the people at the country's helm would come to their senses has not materialised. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin signed the long-suffering Concept of Russia's Long-term Social and Economic Development through 2020. It proceeds from that document, which will become the foundation of the Government's policy, that the crisis will not prevent Russia from becoming one of the world's five largest economies by the specified date.

bragin-sasha: There is no time for panicking and feeling sorry for oneself; survival is the only goal in a crisis. I am surprised - is this your first crisis? Haven't you learned that you must fend for yourself, because the others - the authorities, employers, and public organisations - don't care about you, and have no resources anyway?

irkutsk-zabvo: Surveys conducted by the Public Opinion pollster show that Russians are disappointed by the media coverage of the financial crisis. As many as 45% of the respondents say their information is not objective,

and 57% think the media conceal the truth on instructions from the authorities.

Well, those Russians are not fools after all.
