The plant's personnel welcomed Mr Putin in the control room. The shift foreman reported to the prime minister on the power unit's status, saying that there were no radiation or energy security deviations, and asked for permission to start increasing the unit's capacity.
"Commence," ordered Mr Putin.
After the commissioning, the prime minister was advised that the first kilowatt-hours produced by the second power unit of the Volgodonsk NPP were being supplied into the country's grid.
After the ceremony Mr Putin wrote in the distinguished visitors' book: "Congratulations on commissioning the power unit".
The prime minister later visited the turbine hall, where the second unit's turbine is located. Sergei Kiriyenko, Head of the State Atomic Energy Corporation, showed Mr Putin the third and fourth power units, which were under construction and were to be put into service in 2014 and 2017, respectively.
