Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Belarusian counterpart Sergei Sidorsky lay flowers at Eternal Flame at Brest Hero Fortress war memorial

The heads of government held a moment of silence for those who fell in the Great Patriotic War defending the Brest Fortress.
A military band performed the two countries' national anthems.

The Brest Hero Fortress war memorial was opened in September, 1971. The architecture is dominated by three granite slabs under which the fort's defenders lie buried. The war memorial includes the Museum of the Brest Fortress Defence.
Vladimir Putin also visited the St Nicholas garrison church in the citadel.
