Prime Minister Vladimir Putin met with Berthold Huber, Chairman of the IG Metall trade union
“Current civil society dialogue will receive its finishing touches if it is supplemented with dialogue between trade union leaders and trade union organisations.”
Vladimir Putin
At the meeting with Berthold Huber, President of German metalworkers’ union IG Metall

Transcript of the beginning of the meeting:

Vladimir Putin: Mr Huber, I am very happy to see you in Moscow. Our inter-state relations are developing rather successfully. Current civil society dialogue will receive its finishing touches if it is supplemented with dialogue between trade union leaders and trade union organisations. We will support your contacts with our trade union organisations.

We know that you are actively involved in drafting anti-crisis measures. I am confident that the Russian Government and national trade union organisations will show considerable interest in your proposals, your ideas and your experience, all the more so as the German economy and the Russian economy are having difficulty weathering the hardships caused by the global financial and economic crisis.

We hope very much that our cooperation will help us overcome the recession, and that collaboration between German and Russian companies will continue despite the economic crisis and will facilitate a post-crisis recovery. The crisis is bound to end sooner or later.

We are happy to see you. Welcome!

Berthold Huber (as translated): Mr Prime Minister, allow me to cordially thank you for this opportunity to meet and speak with you.

Public organisations, including trade unions, play a very important role. We believe that they must be supported. I feel assured that Russian trade unions will continue to play an important role in the future.

The union IG Metall would like to cooperate with Russian trade unions. In addition, it wishes for transnational companies that are headquartered in Germany to invest in the Russian economy, to create jobs here and to assist productive cooperation between our countries.

As you have said, the consequences of the economic crisis have seriously affected Germany and Russia. I am very much interested in hearing your views on subsequent prospects for overcoming the crisis in Europe and worldwide.

Hired workers are primarily interested in keeping their jobs; the German and Russian Governments must help them to accomplish this objective. Millions of people worldwide consider stable jobs to be the basis of their future well-being.

Thank you again for this invitation and opportunity to have a talk with you.
