Today is the 68th anniversary of the full lifting of the 900-day siege of Leningrad. The 420,000 Leningrad residents who died during the Leningrad blockade during the Great Patriotic War are buried in the cemetery, the world's largest cemetery for the victims of World War II.

Accompanied by young people and veterans, Vladimir Putin laid a wreath at the Motherland bronze sculpture. The monument symbolises all grieving mothers, which is why the garland of oak leaves the woman is holding is covered with a mourning ribbon.
