Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visited the Holy Transfiguration Valaam Monastery, where he took part in a Sunday holiday service, held in the upper church of the Transfiguration Cathedral.
On this day, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the origins of the Venerable Wood of the Holy Cross, and worshippers begin the Dormition Fast. Bishop of the Trinity Pankraty, the abbot of Valaam Monastery, held the service.
After the service, Vladimir Putin and Pankraty also visited the Elias Skete, which was restored on Mr. Putin's initiative and with his support.
