The President and the Prime Minister sat together to watch the competitions held on the courses of the Rosa Khutor Olympic Alpine Skiing Center in Krasnaya Polyana. Later they skied down the courses themselves.

Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin inspected the alpine skiing center, and spoke with people there, including some young athletes.

Then, they watched the downhill skiing competitions together with the President of the Russian Alpine Skiing Federation Svetlana Gladysheva who told them how the competitions are organised and how many athletes take part in them.

The President and the Prime Minister also had an informal conversation with Jean-Claude Killy, chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission.

Later on Dmitry Medvedev and Valadimir Putin made several runs down the slopes.

The competitions organised by the Russian Alpine Skiing and Snowboard Federation are being held from February 15 to 26, 2011. These are the first test competitions on the slopes of the Olympic alpine skiing centre. They consist in two events: downhill and giant slalom. The courses have been prepared separately for men and women. The men's competitions of the European Cup are being held from February 15 to 18 and the women's cup competitions – from February 22 to 26, 2011. About 240 athletes compete in the European Cup.

According to the preliminary estimates of alpine skiing experts, the Rosa Khutor courses are technically among the most complex in the world because they were designed within the highest possible parameters using the maximum elevation differences and slope angles.

The competitions will be a test for all the systems required for this kind of competition: snowmaking, active and passive safety, the logistics system, and medical and transport support.
