As Prime Minister Vladimir Putin emphasised at the meeting, many people in Georgia have supported the idea of restoring the monument to the Great Patriotic War that was demolished in Kutaisi; and among them, he claims, are people not only of different ages, but, more importantly, of different political beliefs.

Born October 22, 1964, in Kobuleti, Autonomous Republic of Ajaria, Georgia.

Education

1988: Graduated from the Physics Department at Moscow State University.

Experience

1988–1989: Senior laboratory assistant at the Institute of Geography, Georgian Academy of Sciences.

1989–1990: Assistant at the Institute of Geology, Estonian Academy of Sciences.

1989–1992: Junior research assistant, research assistant, head of a laboratory at the Berdzenishvili Research Institute, Georgian Academy of Sciences, Batumi.

1992–2000: Member of the Georgian Parliament. Head of the environmental protection and natural resources committee (1992–1995) and the taxes and tariffs committee (1999–2000).

1996–1997: Member of the Supreme Council of Ajaria.

2000–2001 and 2003–2005: Minister of Finance of Georgia.

2001–2003: employed in the private sector.

February 2005– November 16, 2007: Prime Minister of Georgia.

Since December 2008: Leader of the Movement for Fair Georgia.
