Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's new pet dog, given to him as a gift during a trip to Bulgaria, will be called Buffy. On Thursday evening, Mr Putin met the five-year-old Muscovite Dima Sokolov, who had suggested the name in an online contest, at his Novoye Ogaryovo residence outside Moscow. Dima came with his parents, Yulia and Mikhail.
The prime minister showed off the puppy to his guests and reporters.
"I really liked the name you suggested," he said to the boy, and presented him with an autographed football.
Asked if the newcomer got along well with the family's older dog, the Black Lab, Connie, Mr Putin said she had given him a warm welcome, but that the puppy "keeps biting her tail and ears".
Mr Putin said quite a few names had been suggested. One name he liked better than most was "Balkan", a fusion between the common Russian dog name "Polkan" and the name of the peninsula where the dog was born. But the prime minister liked "Buffy" best of all, he said.
