Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visits the VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation in the Sverdlovsk Region

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin visits the VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation in the Sverdlovsk Region

The VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation is a part of the Russian Technologies State Corporation. The corporation (the sole producer of titanium sponge) is the largest producer of rolled titanium, magnesium and steel alloys.

In 2009, the company produced 22,800 tonnes of titanium sponge (65.7% compared with the amount in 2008), 19,200 tonnes of rolled titanium (74.4%), and 31,500 tonnes of magnesium and alloys (67.7%). Of those amounts, the corporation shipped 22.8% of the titanium sponge, 15.4% of the magnesium and 74.2% of the rolled titanium. In January-October 2010, the corporation produced:

20,361 tonnes of titanium sponge or 104.4% compared with the same period in 2009; 26,888 tonnes of magnesium and alloys or 100.1% compared with the same period in 2009;15,961 tonnes of rolled titanium or 102.2% compared with the same period of 2009.

Due to the production rate achieved in the first 10 months of 2010, it is possible to assess the overall production at:

24,400 tonnes of titanium sponge (107% compared with 2009);32,200 tonnes of magnesium and alloys (102.2% compared with 2009),19,900 tonnes of rolled titanium (103.6% compared with 2009).

Some 18,000 people are employed at the corporation. The average monthly wage is 20,358 roubles.

VSMPO-AVISMA has the following strategic objectives:

increasing titanium production by 15-17%: increasing production of ingots, stamped parts, billets and flat-rolled metals;increasing capacity for the production of titanium sponge up to 44,000 tonnes a year by 2015; providing energy security by creating interior and exterior branch power supplies for connecting to power grids of FGC UES; producing magnesium and processing magnesium chloride to increase the production volumes of titanium sponge up to 44,000 tonnes per year.

VSMPO-AVISMA plans to apply the following main investment projects when executing its main strategic objectives in 2009-2020:

developing smelting efficiency – increasing production of ingots by 18,000 tonnes (investments worth 6 billion roubles);developing forging production – increasing it by 11,000 tonnes (investments worth 6 billion roubles);improving and developing rolling production – increasing production by 4,000 tonnes (investments at 2.6 billion roubles);developing units for mechanically processing details of titanium alloys – increasing production rates by 600 tonnes (investments worth 1.8 billion roubles).

The creation of the Titanium Valley special economic zone has recently been a subject of discussion. A number of joint medium-sized and small enterprises manufacturing details and items of the corporation's goods will be set up if the project is implemented; not only will this increase the processing rates of raw materials for titanium, but it will also reduce costs due to waste products being sent back for processing. The realisation of the project will also make Russian titanium products more competitive on global markets. VSMPO-AVISMA has recently been selecting investors from business partners.

Ural Boeing Manufacturing

Ural Boeing Manufacturing is a joint enterprise between Boeing and VSMPO-AVISMA. The enterprise was established on July 26, 2007, on a parity basis, and it was opened in 2009.

Ural Boeing Manufacturing performs the initial mechanical processing of titanium stamped parts that are produced by VSMPO-AVISMA. The final processing of the spare parts is carried out at Boeing's plant in Portland, in the United States, and other metal-processing enterprises of subcontractors. Some 20,000 stamped parts, manufactured at VSMPO-AVISMA and processed at the joint enterprise, are used in the assembly of every new Boeing 787 Dreamliner. This innovative wide-body jet airliner is the first plane to be made primarily of composite materials and titanium. Russia became the first supplier of titanium knots and spare parts for the Dreamliner.

The metal shavings generated during the mechanical processing of the spare parts are put back into production at VSMPO-AVISMA. This measure creates a unique closed-loop supply chain in the production of titanium semi-finished products, stamped parts and other goods.

In 2010, Ural Boeing Manufacturing acquired a quality certificate for the production of goods and launched the mass production of lower chords and large spare parts for the wings of Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The company has been working to master the production of medium-sized spare parts and is preparing to produce small details for the wings of Boeing 787.

The latest five-spindle five-axis duplicate-milling machine equipped with numerical control, as well as MAG Cincinnati's horizontal five-axis one-spindle mechanical processing centres, have been used for mechanical processing. A highly accurate laser tracker has been used to supervise quality control.

There are 80 highly qualified professionals working at the enterprise.
