On Wednesday night, during his visit to Sochi, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin attended the Platform C70 Mixed Fight European Championship.
The prime minister presented an award to the tournament's winner and thanked all the participants in the continental championship, noting in particular the fighters from France and the United Kingdom.
In his speech Prime Minister said he hoped that sambo would become an Olympic sport. "What we call fist fighting has always been popular in Russia. The many different peoples living in Russia have a wide variety of approaches to fighting. In modern history most martial arts in Russia originated from sambo", Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said.
Before the championship the prime minster met with the famous martial arts expert and actor Jean-Claude Van Damme, also a guest at the event, and with the well-known Russian athlete Fyodor Emelianenko.
