Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi

Mr Putin expressed sympathy and support for his Italian counterpart and outrage at the unseemly incident.

Knowing that Mr Berlusconi is a man of strong will, the Russian Prime Minister expressed confidence that he "will recuperate fast and will soon resume his duties."

Mr Putin also said that Silvio Berlusconi behaved courageously in an emergency.
