Vladimir Putin sent a message to the teachers, students and alumni of the Gerasimov State University of Cinematography (VGIK) congratulating them on the 90th anniversary since the university’s founding
The message reads, in part:
"VGIK is a unique institution, with its own history, traditions, and inimitable atmosphere that has fascinated everyone who has been fortunate enough to study and work here. This renowned school was one of the sources of professional cinematographic education. It has been a major artistic workshop for decades, nurturing talent and creativity, and developing character in art.
"There are a lot of outstanding, famous and acclaimed actors, directors, cameramen and other professionals among VGIK alumni, a number of whom have achieved international recognition. They have carried the devotion to their trade born at this university through their entire lives, and passed it on to their students, the new generation of VGIK students.
"The sweeping developments in cinema require more riveting ideas, as well as skilled professionals who are able to bring them into life. I have confidence that this institution, where the best traditions and new ideas complement each other, will be successful in training such professionals."
