Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sent a message of greetings to the participants of the St. Petersburg shore stage of the international regatta of training sailing ships, the Tall Ships’ Race - Baltic 2009

The message reads, in part:

"Having become famous all over the world, these prestigious races gather energetic and purposeful people, who sincerely love and know sailing. Importantly, the young people who are members of the crews on a par with professionals are receiving a good opportunity to acquire experience and knowledge, reveal their potential, and, of course, develop courage, endurance, and team spirit. I am referring to the qualities without which it is difficult to work in a team, and pursue a common victory. Indicatively, the main prize of the races, the Friendship Trophy, is being awarded to the most coordinated crew.

"It is gratifying that St. Petersburg, which is by right considered Russia's sea capital, has been given the honour to host the regatta's shore stage for the second time. The accumulated experience of organising large-scale events will allow the city to host the sail festival in accordance with the world's highest standards. Its rich heritage will allow everyone to learn more about Russian culture."
