"Valentin Varennikov has passed away. He was a genuine patriot and citizen, a man whose life can rightly serve as a bright example of invincible will, and adherence to his duty, officer's honour, and high moral ideals.

We will always cherish the memory of General Varennikov, a glorious son of the Fatherland."
