Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sent his condolences to Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi

The message says, in part:

"It is with deep regret and sadness that I have learnt about the earthquake in central Italy that has today inflicted human losses and extensive destruction. The news about children killed in the disaster has been particularly saddening.

On behalf of the Government of the Russian Federation and on my own behalf, I would like to offer heartfelt condolences to the families of those who perished and I wish an early recovery to all those affected. I hope that the after effects of this catastrophe will be promptly overcome. We are prepared to give any assistance you may need."
