Prime Minister Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev. The conversation took place on Russia's initiative.

Mr Putin told his Bulgarian counterpart that Russia has partially resumed gas supplies. "Unfortunately, Russian gas cannot enter Ukraine's gas transit system, for it is not working," Mr Putin said.

The Russian Prime Minister said that its European partners should work more actively with the Ukrainian side to ensure the normal functioning of its gas transit system to guarantee Russian gas supplies to Europe.

Mr Putin and Mr Stanishev agreed that the Bulgarian Prime Minister should pay an urgent visit to Moscow.
