Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone today with Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country currently holds the European Union rotating presidency

The Russian Prime Minister made the call.

Mr Putin and Mr Topolanek discussed the protocol for international control of Russian gas delivery to European consumers across Ukraine.

Mr Topolanek said the Ukrainian declaration was not an integral part of the protocol, only reflecting that country's opinion.

In this connection, Mr Putin proposed sending to the Russian Government a protocol signed by Ukraine without additions or provisos.

The Russian Prime Minister emphasized that Ukraine's addition to the protocol had not been discussed with Russia. Moreover, it distorted the very essence of the document on international control over the Russian gas transit through Ukraine and aggravated the existing problem with unrelated issues.
