The message read, in part:
"Today, as we celebrate Alexander Solzhenitsyn's 90th birthday, we remember this strong, brave and talented person, a real patriot and citizen. We pay tribute to him and express immense respect for his multi-faceted cultural and educational work, as well as the richest literary and ideological heritage, which is an integral part of the great Russian literature and public thought.
"I have the most pleasant memories of my meeting with Mr Solzhenitsyn in your warm and hospitable cottage in Troitse-Lykovo. I remember his wise words, imbued with sincere care about Russia and its future.
"Let me express today a deep gratitude for many years of your selfless work, the courage you needed to withstand the hardships you experienced, and the huge contribution to publishing and promoting the works by Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
"I sincerely wish you good health, energy, and all the best."
