Prime Minister Vladimir Putin congratulates St Petersburg and Leningrad Region residents on the 68th anniversary of lifting the siege

The message reads, in part:

"January 27, 1944 is a special day in Russia's history. It is a symbol of the victory of spirit and courage, of truth and justice.

"Leningrad residents defended their city for long 900 days, notwithstanding hunger and bombardments, while losing their relatives and friends. Each resident contributed to defeating the enemy and fulfilled his duty in the people's volunteer corps, in the army, in the fleet, at factories, in hospitals and in their cold flats. They did not surrender and never lost their dignity or faith. This is why Leningrad held out and achieved victory.

"I respectfully bow to war veterans.

"May the memory of the fallen live on forever.

"Happy Day of War Glory – Happy Day of Lifting Leningrad's Siege!"
