Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sends his condolences over the death of President of the Republic of Abkhazia Sergei Bagapsh
The message of condolence to Abkhazian Prime Minister Sergei Shamba reads, in part:
"Sergei Bagapsh, an outstanding politician and statesman, a true patriot of his country, has passed away. His name is associated with Abkhazia's first steps as a sovereign entity under international law. His role in the establishment of Abkhazian statehood and the socio-economic development of the Republic of Abkhazia can not be overestimated.
"We will always remember Sergei Bagapsh as a staunch advocate of reinforcing the historical ties of friendship between Russia and Abkhazia, and of closer bilateral cooperation in all areas. We share the grief of the fraternal Abkhazian people.
"Please, convey my deepest sympathies and words of support to the family and friends of Sergei Bagapsh."
