A message of condolences sent to Krainev's family reads, in part:

"A brilliant musician has died: a bright exponent of the Russian school of musical interpretation and a wise teacher and educator. Mr Krainev's extraordinary talent and professional zeal earned him a place among the greatest musicians of our times.

"This gifted artist will live on in the memory of his family, friends, students, and the many admirers of his unique talent."
