Prime Minister Vladimir Putin sends a message to members of the Chernobyl Union of Russia on the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster

The message reads, in part:
"Twenty five years ago, on April 26, 1986 one of the biggest and most tragic man-made disasters in human history occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power station.
This disaster became a lesson for all of humanity and forced everyone to reassess the reliability and safety requirements for nuclear power facilities. Today, we must remember the people who fulfilled their duty with integrity and courage: the fire fighters who extinguished the fire at the station, and the service members and builders who took part in the clean-up efforts. Many of them sacrificed their lives so that others could live.
On this day we bow our heads in their memory and the memory of all victims of radiation-related accidents."
