Mr Putin's telegram to the bereaved reads, in part:
"I wish to extend my condolences to the friends and relatives of the late Vasily Kononov, a man of valour and courage, for whom we all had a profound respect.
He went through all the trials and tribulations of life with dignity, and was true to his ideals to his dying day. Vasily Kononov will be forever in our memory."
