The Prime Minister expresses deep condolences over the death of Viktor Chernomyrdin, an outstanding politician and statesman
A message addressed to Viktor Chernomyrdin's relatives reads, in part:
"An outstanding citizen of Russia has departed life – a politician and a statesman whose name is inseparably bound with the landmark events in the current history of this country.
"Viktor Chernomyrdin was head of the Russian government for almost six years. He passed through many ordeals with honor while at his post. He invariably assumed responsibility for the decisions made. He never betrayed his beliefs or swerved from his chosen path. He did a great deal to ensure the rebirth of this country.
"Mr Chernomyrdin was a kind, wise and gifted person. He earned the affection and respect of Russians and from his colleagues abroad.
"We shall always keep the fond memory of Viktor Chernomyrdrin."
