Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s message of greetings to the XIX International Banking Congress

The message reads, in part:

"This annual congress has become a major business event in St Petersburg and the whole of Russia. It traditionally attracts the leaders from government agencies and business, including both Russian and foreign banks and banking associations.

"This year participants and guests will discuss the main lessons learned from the global financial crisis and ways to enhance the effectiveness of the banking sector under these circumstances. Its priorities include improving interaction between the banking and the non-financial sectors of the economy, risk management and promoting consumer lending.

"Support for the financial and lending system is a priority for the government. We expect the banking community to play a constructive role in resolving acute socio-economic problems and in promoting the development of the banking sector, which relies on experienced and stable business traditions in Russia.

"It is symbolic that this year the congress has coincided with the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the country's largest financial institution, the Central Bank of Russia.

"I congratulate you on this jubilee and wish the congress success."
